ADULT ILLNESSES

Most of the advice given for children also applies to adults.

Colds and Flu

You may experience a combination of symptoms including, runny nose, cough, temperature and muscle aches and pains. Colds and flu are caused by viruses and antibiotics are of no use in their treatment. It may take 7 - 10 days for the symptoms to ease. Treatment includes taking recommended doses of Paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen (Nurofen) for the temperature and aches, and drinking plenty of fluids. Do not worry if you do not eat for a few days, you will come to no harm.

Sore Throats

These are usually caused by a virus and may be associated with cold/flu symptoms. Again antibiotics are of no use in most cases and treatment consists of taking regular Paracetamol or soluble aspirin in the maximum recommended dose and drinking plenty of fluids. Most sore throats will resolve within 7 days but if your symptoms persist longer than this, it may be worth consulting your doctor or nurse.
