Fever/Temperature
- Many childhood illnesses cause a fever/temperature. You can monitor this with a thermometer
or a fever scan, but it is often easier to feel how hot your child is by placing
a hand on the back of his/her neck. In all cases you should try to make the child
cooler.
- Strip the child to pants or nappy. Do not wrap the child up in duvets or blankets.
The child may say he feels cold and may even shiver when his temperature is high,
but you should still keep him unwrapped. Regular junior Paracetamol at the maximum
dose for the child’s age is helpful in reducing temperature.
- Give Paracetamol every 4 - 6 hours. Common brand names for junior Paracetamol are
Calpol or Disprol. If the child is still hot, try tepid sponging - using a wet
flannel or sponge soaked in tepid (not cold) water, make the child wet and leave
the water to evaporate.
- An alternative is simply to sit the child in a tepid bath but do not leave the child
unattended.
Earache
This is very common and often associated with a cold. It is not always due to an
ear infection. Simple treatment includes giving regular junior Paracetamol. If the
earache persists for 2 - 3 days you should consult your doctor during normal surgery
hours for further advice. If the child has a high fever or is sick, seek advice earlier.
